About the Role

ER of Lufkin, backed by Focus Physicians Group PLLC, is looking for a clinically confident emergency room physician to care for patients across the full range of acute illnesses, injuries, and trauma. This is an on-site role in Lufkin, Texas that also draws from the towns around it in East Texas, roughly 30 to 50 miles out, including Nacogdoches, Diboll, Huntington, and Corrigan. You'll lead care in a fast-paced freestanding ER while giving every walk-in patient concierge-level attention.

ER of Lufkin is seeking an experienced and clinically confident freestanding emergency room physician to provide high-quality emergency medical care to patients presenting with acute illnesses, injuries, trauma, and urgent medical conditions. The physician will be responsible for evaluating, diagnosing, treating, stabilizing, observing, discharging, or transferring patients as clinically appropriate. This position requires strong emergency medicine judgment, excellent communication skills, timely documentation, and the ability to lead patient care in a fast-paced emergency room environment, while providing concierge medicine to every walk-in. The physician must be comfortable managing both adult and pediatric patients and working closely with nurses, mid-level providers, radiology, laboratory, registration, and facility leadership.

Key Responsibilities

Emergency Patient Care

  • Provide emergency medical care to all patients presenting to ER of Lufkin.
  • Evaluate, diagnose, treat, stabilize, discharge, observe, or transfer patients based on clinical need.
  • Manage adult and pediatric emergency presentations, including chest pain, respiratory distress, abdominal pain, trauma, fractures, infections, dehydration, neurologic symptoms, and other acute conditions.
  • Deliver care in a respectful, professional, and nondiscriminatory manner.
  • Make safe and appropriate clinical decisions regarding discharge, continued observation, or transfer to another facility when required.

Triage Duties

  • Perform triage during peak hours.
  • Assist in determining peak-time staffing needs.

Shift Coverage

  • Provide on-site physician coverage as assigned by the facility schedule.
  • Remain physically present in the emergency department during the assigned shift.
  • Remain on site until formally relieved by another qualified provider.
  • Participate in on-call, back-up call, and peak-time coverage when needed.
  • Respond promptly to pages, calls, patient care needs, and clinical concerns.

Observation Care

  • Manage patients requiring extended evaluation or short-term observation.
  • Continue medical oversight until the patient is ready for discharge or transfer.
  • Ensure observation care follows applicable Texas freestanding emergency room requirements and payer documentation standards.
  • Maintain full responsibility for medical decisions regarding admission, discharge, transfer, or continued observation.
  • Provide extended coverage beyond normal shifts during observation care. The observation period is capped at 23 hours.

Team Leadership

  • Serve as the clinical leader during assigned shifts.
  • Collaborate with nurses, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, radiology technicians, laboratory staff, and administrative teams.
  • Supervise and collaborate with mid-level providers according to Texas law and facility policy.
  • Support safe patient flow, timely decision making, and high-quality emergency care.
  • Promote teamwork, professionalism, accountability, and patient safety.

Documentation and Compliance

  • Complete accurate and timely medical documentation in the electronic health record.
  • Document history, examination, diagnosis, medical decision making, procedures, reassessments, discharge instructions, observation care, and transfer details.
  • Follow facility policies, clinical protocols, order sets, infection control standards, and quality assurance requirements.
  • Comply with HIPAA, Texas Medical Board standards, patient safety requirements, and applicable healthcare regulations.
  • Cooperate with credentialing, payer enrollment, audits, documentation reviews, and compliance requests.
  • Use personal protective equipment, proper hand hygiene, and standard or universal precautions.
  • Complete CPT/ICD coding and EHR-based documentation with monthly time records. Documentation is required for compensation approval.

Required Qualifications

  • MD or DO degree from an accredited medical school.
  • Active and unrestricted Texas medical license.
  • Current DEA registration.
  • Current BLS certification.
  • Current ACLS certification.
  • Current PALS certification.
  • ATLS certification preferred.
  • Strong emergency medicine, trauma, urgent care, or acute care experience.
  • Ability to manage adult and pediatric emergency patients independently.
  • Strong clinical judgment, communication skills, and leadership ability.
  • Ability to meet credentialing and documentation requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Board certification or board eligibility in Emergency Medicine.
  • Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, or Surgery physicians with strong emergency room experience may be considered.
  • Previous freestanding emergency room experience.
  • Experience supervising mid-level providers.
  • Strong procedural skills and comfort with emergency stabilization.

Credentialing Requirements

The physician must provide and maintain current documentation, including:

  • Texas medical license
  • DEA certificate
  • BLS, ACLS, PALS, and ATLS certificates, if applicable
  • Government-issued photo ID
  • Current CV
  • Texas Standardized Credentialing Application
  • NPDB self-query report or certificate
  • Malpractice history
  • Disclosure of any disciplinary actions or restrictions
  • Vaccination and immunity records
  • Recent TB screening
  • Background check consent form

Performance Expectations

The physician is expected to provide safe, timely, compassionate, and professional emergency care. The physician must maintain accurate documentation, support facility operations, follow policies, respond promptly to clinical needs, and contribute to a respectful and high-performing team culture.

Compensation

Compensation is based on experience, shift type, employment classification, schedule commitment, and facility needs. Final compensation terms are confirmed in writing.
